University of Nebraska Medical Center (05/05/26) Simpson, Kalani
The University of Nebraska Medical Center has created a new collaboration between its College of Pharmacy and its Counseling and Psychological Services team to better prepare student pharmacists for encounters with patients experiencing suicidal thoughts or mental health crises. After students requested more challenging and realistic training scenarios, faculty partnered with campus counselors to provide instruction on recognizing warning signs, responding appropriately, and practicing difficult conversations through simulated patient interactions. Students reported significant increases in confidence, noting that the hands-on practice, guidance from mental health professionals, and supportive environment helped them feel more capable of addressing sensitive situations they may face in real-world pharmacy settings, especially in rural communities where pharmacists are often among the most accessible health care providers.
