Researchers evaluated the motivations behind continued education and competence for physicians who are board certified in multiple specialties. The qualitative study used thematic analysis, with semi-structured, virtual interviews of 15 internists with related subspecialties. Factors identified for why some physicians maintain competency in multiple medical specialties include social responsibility, promise of expertise, greater job opportunities, greater expertise, professional requirements, and personal fulfillment. Based on their findings, the study authors suggest that "the practical application of this study would include organizational-based education focused on hybrid learning (education explicitly focusing on overlapping or cross-discipline fields)." They also note the dearth of information that focuses on cross-discipline education and training, although there are many educational opportunities.
