Educational Gaps and Suggestions for Change for Pediatric Transplant Fellowship Training Based on Fellow Survey Responses

By: Pediatric Transplantation

Pediatric Transplantation (05/19/25) Raina, Rupesh; Gallegos, Flora R.; McCulloch, Mignon; et al.

An international survey of pediatric transplant fellows identifies educational gaps in training for this field and highlights respondents' preferred training methods. The survey was sent to 416 pediatric transplant fellows and received 237 responses. Respondents indicated they were most confident about their pre-transplantation clinical knowledge, with about 75% saying they were extremely or very aware of pre-transplant workups and assessments. For other areas of training, respondents were much less confident, with only 24% saying they felt extremely knowledgeable about the adverse effects of immunosuppression and about 22% feeling very confident when managing acute rejection. There was significant interest in dynamic educational formats, with almost 89% expressing interest in clinical case discussions. Nearly two-thirds of the respondents said continuing medical education was their preferred method of boosting their skills. Other methods cited included workshops and support for transition protocols and psychosocial counseling.
