In Memory of Ron T. Murray, Ed.D., CHCP, FACEHP, MRSB, PGCE

By: Jann Torrance Balmer, Ph.D., RN, FACEHP, FAAN

Ronald (Ron) T. Murray, Ed.D., CHCP, FACEHP, MRSB, PGCE, died unexpectedly on April 3, 2024, in Pickering, North Yorkshire, U.K. Ron is survived by his wife, Megan, and two daughters, Heidi, and Nell, as well as other family members.

Ron was a highly respected member of the U.S. and global CME/CPD communities who served as an ACCME surveyor, mentor, teacher and colleague over the past three decades. Ron served as the associate director for CME at the University of Virginia School of Medicine for over 17 years and as an expert consultant, journalist and resource to CME professionals engaged in global CPD.

In addition to his role at the University of Virginia Office of Continuing Medical Education, Ron received the Robert Raszkowski, MD, PhD, ACCME Hero Award for his dedication to quality independent continuing education by completing over 100 accreditation surveys for the ACCME. He was active and presented sessions in national and international professional organizations and served as the secretary for the Global Alliance for CME for over eight years. Over the past 10 years, Ron served on the Planning Committee of the European CME Forum as well as the Editorial Board of the Journal of CME. He shared advances in CME/CPD education by publishing professional meeting summaries as well as mentoring and advising CME professionals in Europe.

Ron’s gregarious, friendly and positive demeanor reflected a true enjoyment in conversations with colleagues, opportunities for collaboration and mentorship, and new adventures. Ron was an avid rugby player, continuing to participate in the sport until the age of 70, at which time he transferred his energies to the role of referee. He enjoyed his large network of rugby colleagues and genuinely enjoyed attending games across the globe.

Ron Murray will be greatly missed by his colleagues and friends in the CME/CPD national and international communities. A project to collect stories, memories and photographs into a memory album for his family will be initiated in the next month. Questions regarding participation in this project can be directed to Jann Balmer at jbalmer@virginia.edu.
