PEPCAL: A Heuristic Framework for Teaching Generative AI to Continuing Professional Education Providers and Faculty Developers

By: Journal of Continuing Education in the Health Professions

Journal of Continuing Education in the Health Professions (07/16/26) MacNeill, Heather; Masters, Ken; Benjamin, Jennifer; et al.

Researchers introduce a conceptual model for integrating generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) into continuing professional development (CPD) and faculty development (FD) in health professions education. The Pedagogical-Ethical-Preparation-Creative-Administrative-Large Data (PEPCAL) framework, which was developed based on the authors' international teaching experience, emerging research, and participant feedback, organizes GenAI adoption around two dimensions: foundational areas for teaching about GenAI (Pedagogical Design, Ethical Considerations, and Preparation/Practical Application) and key ways educators can use it (Creative Applications, Administrative Educational Tasks, and Large Data Insights). The framework encourages educators to move beyond simply experimenting with AI tools toward an education-centered approach that leverages GenAI to enhance learning, curriculum design, feedback, administrative efficiency, and data-driven decision-making, while also addressing important concerns such as ethics, environmental impact, burnout, and the risk of deskilling. Intended to complement existing professional development frameworks, PEPCAL helps educators responsibly implement, evaluate, and refine GenAI-supported teaching practices while fostering discussion about the complex and evolving challenges associated with AI in education.
