Nutrition in Geriatrics-focused Continuing Medical Education

By: Journal of Nutrition in Gerontology and Geriatrics

Journal of Nutrition in Gerontology and Geriatrics (04/11/2026) Johnston, Emily A.; Rached, Noor Abi; Williams, April R.; et al.

There is insufficient practical nutrition education available at geriatrics-focused continuing medical education (CME) conferences to compensate for the lack of nutrition training in medical education, a new study finds. Twenty-five percent of older adults in the United States live with two or more chronic conditions that could be prevented or managed through nutrition. To assess whether CME could fill this gap, researchers reviewed 19 agendas from three major geriatrics-related CME conferences held between 2018 and 2025, searching for relevant terms such as "nutrition," "diet," and "nutrients." The review found that nutrition content was inconsistently offered, with some conferences providing no nutrition-related sessions at all and others offering less than 10 minutes of relevant material. Malnutrition and food security were rarely addressed. "Improved interdisciplinary participation at CME events could increase availability of nutrition education for physicians," the study authors conclude. They also voice their support for continued efforts to enhance nutrition education across the full spectrum of medical training.
