National Resident Matching Program Releases the 2025 Main Residency Match Results, Celebrates the Next Generation of Physicians

The 2025 Main Residency Match included 52,498 applicants competing for 43,237 positions, the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) reports. Among those applicants, 47,208 submitted a certified rank-order list. "This year's Main Residency Match marks a milestone of continued success for the graduate medical education community as a record number of applicants and residency training programs matched," said NRMP President and CEO Donna L. Lamb, DHSc, MBA, BSN. "The NRMP continues to be a service that welcomes all who wish to participate, capably advocating for and supporting the aspirations of young physicians and the priorities of residency training programs to collectively address the varied health needs of communities across the nation." In all, there were 6,626 certified program tracks in the Match this year, a record high. Two new specialties in the Match this year are Public Health and Preventive Medicine and Occupational and Environmental Medicine. According to the NRMP, nearly 80% of applicants who certified a rank order list matched to either a categorical or preliminary (post graduate year-1, or PGY-1) position. Specifically, osteopathic seniors achieved a 92.6% PGY-1 match rate, up 0.3% from 2024; 93.5% of U.S. MD seniors matched, the same as 2024; 67.8% of U.S. citizen international medical graduates (IMGs) matched, up 0.8% from last year; and 58% of non-U.S. citizen IMGs matched, a 0.5% decrease. The NRMP reports that primary care positions continue to increase, with 20,300 categorical positions offered, while there was renewed interest in Emergency Medicine, with 3,068 positions, and Obstetrics and Gynecology continues to be competitive, with 1,604 residency positions offered.
