How ABIM Is Supporting Internists at the Beginning of their Certification Journey

The American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) has launched a new needs-based pilot program offering a 50% exam fee credit to eligible first-time candidates for the 2026 Internal Medicine Certification Exam. Applicants must complete a brief questionnaire attesting to financial hardship and register separately for the exam when the registration period opens on December 1, 2025. Open to all medical graduates regardless of training background, the program prioritizes candidates from residency programs lacking exam funding support. ABIM aims to assist as many applicants as possible and will evaluate the pilot's impact for future use. Emphasizing the importance of board certification in improving patient outcomes, ABIM President and CEO Furman S. McDonald, MD, MPH, highlighted the initiative as a meaningful step toward supporting aspiring physicians amid growing healthcare demands.
