Evaluating the Effectiveness of the Geriatrician-designed ‘Older Patient Care and Seek Course’ for Family Physicians

In a study evaluating a geriatric education program for primary care clinicians, 22 family medicine specialists and residents participated in a six-hour, interactive course led by geriatricians that focused on common geriatric syndromes, including polypharmacy, malnutrition, pressure injuries, cognitive impairment and preventive care. Participants completed the same 18-item knowledge test before and after the training. The group was predominantly female (86.4%), had a median age of 30 years, and a median of 5 years of postgraduate clinical experience. Mean test scores increased significantly from 9.0 before the course to 14.6 afterward (p < 0.01), indicating substantial gains in knowledge. The findings suggest that structured, geriatrician-led continuing medical education programs can effectively improve primary care physicians' recognition and understanding of geriatric syndromes, supporting better care for the growing older adult population.
