Development and Validation of an Instrument for Measuring Equality, Diversity and Inclusivity (EDI) in Medical Education Teaching Resources: The GRADES10

To address the diversity of teaching materials in medical schools, researchers developed a measurement tool. The GRADES10 (Gender, Religion, Age, Disability, Ethnicity/Race, Sexuality, Socio-economic status) instrument was tested and validated with experts and applied to a number of medical education resources. A user guide was created to support its use in practice. Testing found the GRADES10 tool had an intraclass correlation coefficient of 0.83%, while the Cronbach's Alpha measure of internal consistency of 0.97. The researchers report that the GRADES10 instrument is a reliable measure of diversity in medical teaching resources, noting that it "has the potential to contribute to creating a more inclusive learning environment by allowing its users to apply a diversity metric to their educational materials, to identify gaps and areas for improvement." By integrating the tool into continuing medical education courses going forward, the study authors say it could affect "the grassroots of medical education diversification, which may have a beneficial effect on medical student and doctors' attitudes, experiences and ultimately on patient care."
