Adherence Unveiled: A Concept Analysis of Medication Adherence in Adult Patients with Sickle Cell Disease

Integrating instruction about sickle cell disease (SCD) medication adherence into nursing education and continuing education may improve clinical interactions and patient outcomes, researchers report. Despite the importance of adherence to treatment protocols for people with SCD, some 30%-60% of patients are nonadherent. To learn more about medication adherence in adults with SCD, researchers conducted a literature review, ultimately identifying 15 relevant articles. From these, they collected attributes, antecedents, and consequences of adherence. The findings, they report, highlight the importance of adherence in healthcare, noting that it "offers an opportunity for interventions to improve patient outcomes ... and it should be further integrated into research and practice to improve the quality of life for patients with SCD."
